Metal Detectorist Discovers Medieval Wedding Ring Worth $47,000
A guy found a mediaeval diamond wedding ring in "nearly immaculate shape" in Thorncombe, South West England.
This month's auction is estimated to earn between £30,000 and £40,000 ($35,500 and $47,300).
David Board, 69, found the "stunning" ring on his second attempt at becoming a metal detectorist after scouring local beaches in the 1970s.
He said: "It's likely unique. Each ring was unique back then, not mass-produced. Wow."
In 2019, Board resumed metal detecting. On the second day of a field search, he had almost given up when he obtained a signal by a footpath.
Board thought the culprit was a candy wrapper, but it was a gold ring. Board thought the mud-covered object was "scrap metal" and put it in his pocket.
"When I got home and washed it off, we discovered it was a lot better than we thought," he said.
